What to Do After Giving a Stranger Remote Access

A calm priority list for disconnecting access, protecting accounts, and checking the computer.

General educational information • Reviewed July 16, 2026

Disconnect first

Disconnect the computer from the network and end any active call. Do not continue following instructions from the person who contacted you.

Protect money and accounts

If payment or financial information was exposed, contact the institution directly using a trusted number. Use a different trusted device for important password changes and review recent activity.

Check the computer

Document what was installed or changed, remove unwanted remote-access tools, check browser settings and startup items, and review whether personal files may have been accessed.
