Start with the pattern
Notice whether the computer is slow from the moment it starts, only while browsing, or only during one task. That pattern is more useful than installing a general cleanup tool.
Common causes
Nearly full storage, too many startup programs, a failing storage device, unwanted software, heat, limited memory, and a damaged user profile can produce similar symptoms. Measuring the bottleneck prevents unnecessary changes.
When to stop troubleshooting
Back up important files before major cleanup. If the computer clicks, becomes extremely hot, repeatedly freezes during copying, or contains irreplaceable data, arrange an evaluation before continuing.
